Music Royalties

Royalties?! No were not talking about her Royal Highness, The Queen. We're talking about how YOU, the songwriter gets paid for your music

In order to make money writing songs you need to understand music royalties and how they work. If you don't you might end up making no money from your songs or very little compared to what you deserve.

There are four major incomes from songs:

  1. Mechanical Royalties
  2. Performance Royalties
  3. Synchronization Royalties
  4. Print Royalties

Methods Of Royalty Payments

Royalties are collected and shared out in different ways depending on a number of factors i.e. publishing contracts, co-writing contracts etc...

But in general mechanical, synchronization, and print royalties are collected by the publisher who then takes his share and then sends you yours. This then only leaves the performance royalty to be collected, this is the job of the Performance Rights Organization - BMI, ASCAP, SESAC, IMRO etc...

Once the music royalties are collected they will send you and your publisher your share, which was stated in the terms of your royalty agreement.
