Drum Rhythm
Let's take a look at what drum rhythm is all about. Having a great groove in your song is essential if you want people to get moving when they hear your song.
Rhythm is made up of a few different elements such as; time signature, tempo and pulse. Let's take a closer look at these elements.
Here's a more detailed definition of rhythm.
Time Signature
The time signature of a song tells you how many beats are in a bar and how long each bar lasts. Common Time or 4/4 is the most common time used.
The first number indicates that there are 4 beats in a bar and the second lets you know how long each beat lasts. So in 4/4 time each beat lasts a quarter.
Tempo
The tempo is how fast the song is and is measured in BPM (beats per minute). As a rough guide:
- Ballads Tempo ranges from 60pbm to 90bpm
- Pop songs - 100bpm and above
- Dance music tempos are usually fast, over 120bpm
Pulse
The predominant beat in music is referred to as the pulse. This is predominately provided by the bass drum.
- Dance music has a "four to the floor" pulse which means the bass drum plays on beats 1, 2, 3, 4
- Rock music has a "backbeat" which accents the 2 and 4 beat
- Reggae tends to accent the 3 beat
